I wanted to keep all my little subsites in 1 place while not cutting off the people who may have only wanted to follow the garden blog!
I've already seeded a buncha stuff I wanted to plant and I'm just waiting on that to grow. The strawberries I still had laying around have also started sprouting again! Those are in the suspended plastic planters above the potatoes!
The Lavas and other little stuff I kept around are also coming up! Fresh new green leaves are popping up and I even had a big bee visitor yesterday! The sun is out again on the regular and we only have a few light rain forecasts coming up. With a bit of luck we'll have a good year! (If I don't have to clear the balcony for construction or we get a massive moth attack again)
The potatoes that were left around from last year have started sprouting really well! I split some of them over various pots and none of them seem too schocked. I also threw a lot of random seeds or ones close to their expiration date in the last long wooden planter I have. I managed to break the other into piece and dispose of it proper. Gotta get special bags and all that, make appointments.
2026 - 3
I sorted out some of the stuff I already wanted to plant at the start of the month. We had some super sunny days followed by a week of rain.
Right now it's mostly herbs, some cat grass, lettuce and small tomatoes.
Doing the same as I always do, DIY sprout boxes I keep a little wet and in the sun. If the night gets too cold I bring them inside.
Most of the snails left over the winter. I see 1 or 2 every so often, but they seem content with eating weeds and some plants that grew on their own and that I don't care about super much. If it becomes a problem I'll look into the method where you surround the base with cracked eggshells.
I've readied my potato pots and got jumpscarred by some older ones still growing. Some small ones I missed managed to overwinter and have started growing. I still have some of my own potatoes for seeing, but I'm gonna see if some of the older ones will grow to normal size, despite coming from a little forgotten sprout.
The one in the white bucket had the lid on it for the winter and managed to grow a whole bunch of sprouts. It's maybe 2 or 3 actual potatoes that enjoyed a bit more light then the rest.
I swapped the 2 wooden planters I was still using, after the bottom fell out of one. Gonna shatter the rest of it later and dispose of it proper.
2026 - 2
I still have plans to get rid of the wood planters and stick with the food grade plastic buckets for at least this year. They are showing their sun-worn age though, after these last few years the plastic is getting more and more brittle. The yellow ones are fine for now, but the grey ones are starting to splinter here and there.
I have an idea of how I wanna plant things out and I'm gonna keep it pretty simple for the ones I really want. Just strawberry, potatoes, tomatoes, lavas, mint and beans are my main focus. I still have random other seeds and if I find a nice and big planter I might still try sugarcorn again!
2026 - 1
We only had snow for a few days, but the temps stayed in the minus for a long time. It's looking a little better at the end of the month now, but only a little. Just patiently waiting out the last frost day.
I have a strawberry plant indoors just to be sure, but it seems like the one in the wooden planter keeps living. Large parts are dead, but under that there are still some fresh green leaves that against all odds slowly grow on. The Lavas also just keeps going.
